Riders of Reason
Inspired by the cultural idea of “The Four Horsemen”
Riders of Reason is an original digital artwork reimagining four influential contemporary thinkers in the symbolic company of horses beneath a star-filled night sky. Rather than presenting literal portraiture, the piece plays with cultural iconography, presence and mythic suggestion, placing recognisable intellectual figures inside an unexpected, almost allegorical setting.
Often associated with the group informally known as “The Four Horsemen of New Atheism”, the figures evoke Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris and Daniel Dennett as cultural icons rather than strict portrait subjects. The work engages with recognition thoughtfully, inviting viewers to consider personality, reputation and philosophical identity alongside the humour and surrealism of the scene itself.
Visually, the image balances graphic clarity with quiet drama: strong outlines, simplified colour fields and controlled contrast create a sense of stillness and gravity, while the surreal pairing of dark suits, patient horses and expansive night sky introduces curiosity, ambiguity and subtle playfulness. The piece invites recognition without relying upon it, allowing multiple readings and interpretations.
Created digitally by the artist, the work is produced as a high-quality print, offering a precise and intentional physical expression of the original digital composition.
